Maybe Smoltz should be the closer.

I got to thinking about it, and I was thinking that the Atlanta Braves could really use John Smoltz as their closer.  He is getting up there in years and it would be easier on him, healthwise, for him to come in during the 8th or 9th inning and close the game out.  It would be intimidating to the other team to bring in a rested Smoltz in the 9th while the other team is tired from the game.  I'm not saying that he should not start anymore, it is just that it would be better for him to come in later in the game.

Maybe Smoltz should be the closer.

Well, it is official, the future HOF pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, John Smoltz, is going to have surgury on his shoulder that will end his season and possibly end his baseball career.  I hate to see him go like this, but he does have his health and his family to think about.  There has been talk about the fab 3 (Smoltz, Glavine, and Maddux), retiring at the same time so these former teammates could possibly go into baseball's hall of fame at the same time.  I saw a story on them this morning on This Week In Baseball on FOX.  Tom Glavine thought it would be a great time if they decided to hang things up after this season comes to a close.  I have not heard any decisions, yet, but I will keep watching the sports headlines and check the Atlanta Braves official website to see if they have any news on this.  I think it would be great if the 3 would decide to go one more season and if they would all pitch for the Atlanta Braves again.  The only thing about this is, that when they talked to Greg Maddux, he said things were going very well for him in San Diego with the Padres.  If they ever decide to have one more season together for the Braves, they have my full support.  I would love to see that.  However, if they decide to call it a career, I will wait for the time they become eligable for the HOF.

Maybe Smoltz should be the closer.

You can't go wrong with a situation like the Braves have.  I totally agree with you, it is a win - win situation for the future hall of famer.  The thing that is pushing me towards having John Smoltz as the closer is that it would free up a pitching spot for one of the yonger arms on the Braves pitching staff.  Their pitching is not bad, but some of their pitchers are a little green.  They need some time and an experienced teacher, (such as Smoltz and Glavine), to help them be the type of pitcher that helped the Braves to the playoffs year after year.  I would like to see the Braves develop some of their younger arms and show the N.L. East that the Braves are ready to win again.  Thanks for the response!

Maybe Smoltz should be the closer.

I'm not sure if John Smoltz should be a closer or a starter? What I am sure of is Smoltz will be great in either role that the Braves choose for him. He has got the job done and then some in both roles in the past. He is one of the best pitchers in this era and a first ballot hall of famer. The Braves won't be wrong whatever they decide to do with him. It's what they call a win win situation.
